Description

16x20 Oil on canvas

My 2nd attempt at a landscape. A work in progress - it will require 3 - 4 more hours, plus a lot of drying time.

Originally, I started out trying the wet-on-wet technique of Bob Ross and Bill Alexander, because that seems like a fantastic way of creating a believable fiction quickly. They use fairly simple tricks of layering dark to light to achieve depth. However, they use a LOT more paint than I am comfortable using, and their paints seem to be a lot thinner than mine out of the tube.

So I adapted the process a bit. I use the wet-on-wet with giant brushes technique for the underpainting, and then I start layering on finer details with thicker paints and finer brushes.

When I get the grass "blobs" laid down in a way that looks correct, I scratch the blades of grass in with a pointy scraper tool or the wooden tip of a brush. Most of that detail is lost in this photo. The scratched-in grass will be complimented later by fine spray spatters in the shadowy and highlighted areas.

I may have overdone the highlights on the leaves again. They end up looking plastic. That should be fixed with oily glazes later - the highlights will be evened out and the shadows deepened, depth will be added to the foreground, and the whole thing will go a bit fuzzy and warm.
